Calculus
The following is a comparison of Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 among the five (5) Connect partners through the lens of transferability.
Spreadsheet comparing Calculus courses
- Credit: BSC 3 credits, all others 4 or 4+lab
- Calculus courses are predominantly taught by full time faculty
- Prerequisites are a C or C- in a Precalculus course or passing score on college-level algebra placement test, except at CCCC.
- Texts used by the various institutions are established traditional Calculus texts.
- Technology is used at all institutions. Technology includes calculators such as TI 83.92 and Voyage 200, and computer algebra systems such as Maple and Derive.
- Calculus 1 and 2 topics are comparable at all institutions.
- Topics diverge at Calculus 3. Transferability would probably be on a case-by-case basis to be determined by the department.
Calculus 1
- Courses cover basically the same material through optimization problems.
- BCC and CCCC cover a significant amount of work with definite integrals and their applications.
- BSC does the rules for logarithmic, exponential, and hyperbolic functions.
Calculus 2
- Fairly standard with definite integrals, applications, and techniques of integration.
- BSC ends at techniques of integration and applications of volume and area.
Comments
- BSC has different Calculus sequences for math and business majors. The above comparison is for Math 151 and 152.
- UMD has different Calculus courses depending on major. The above comparison is for Math 113 and 114.
